03/29/2018 - The Hershey Bears are proud to announce that Mason Mitchell has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hershey community during the 2017-18 season.

The 23-year-old rookie has embraced Central Pennsylvania and has been a key part of the Hershey Bearscommunity initiatives during the 2017-18 season. No matter if he was in the lineup or not on the ice, Mitchell was always the first to volunteer his time outside of the rink. He has taken part in over 20 appearances around the community, including monthly children's hospital visits, interacting with military members at Liberty USO, and raising funds for cancer research during the club’s Running For Rachel event. Additionally, he was an advocate for the Movember campaign raising awareness for men's health.

The club's “Roaring to Read” program rewards elementary school students for reading in class and at home.  Mitchell took the time to visit multiple schools around the region to discuss the benefits of reading and encourage overall wellness.

Mitchell is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL’s 2017-18 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bearsforward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League at a later date.
