Allen establishes fund to help hometown deal with COVID-19

May 22nd, 2020 by Chris Pinkert / St. Louis Blues

Blues goalie Jake Allen has established the Fredericton Resilience Fund to help people in his hometown that are out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Allen, along with his wife, Shannon, and Fredericton businessmen Kevin Johnson and Steve Burns, has helped raise more than $200,000 to support over 300 individuals and small businesses, including independent bars, restaurants, shops and services.

“Fredericton is my home, and it’s hard to see people laid off or unable to work due to this crisis we’re all dealing with,” Allen told stlouisblues.com. “This is a town where everyone knows everyone, and we all try to support each other in any way we can. If I can give back to the town that made me who I am in some small way, it’s the least I can do.”

In addition, Allen is also contributing a game-used autographed stick and blocker to raise money for families affected by a mass shooting in Nova Scotia last month. Twenty-two people were killed and three more were injured in the worst mass shooting in Canada’s history. Fans who make a contribution of $20 online will have a chance to win Allen’s game-used gear or a variety of other unique collectibles donated by other athletes in the area.

“We were at home in New Brunswick, and I started reading about what was unfolding when I was online,” Allen told NHLPA.com about the tragedy. “Then I turned on the TV, and the news starts to slowly trickle in. It took a few days for everything to get out and exactly what had happened. It was tough to hear. It’s not far from here, I know a lot of people in that area, and my brother lives in Nova Scotia. It’s a terrible tragedy and you feel for everyone involved.”
